Spatial Illusion with Virtual Lights
Developed for Halina Rice’s track Meld, this experimental AV piece is a procedural exploration of simulated illumination and spatial perception. The core visual conceit centers entirely on the behavior of light within a constrained digital architecture. The composition is structured around a 3D shaft that aligns with the edges of the video frame. This framing technique is designed to break the two-dimensional plane, creating the illusion of an infinite, extending virtual space directly behind the live performer.
Within this digital void, 3D geometries are engineered to behave as light sources. Glowing line segments mimic the rapid, sweeping motion of physical laser arrays, while expansive luminous panels strobe through the darkness. The aggregate effect functions less like a standard AV and more like a hyper-real, computationally driven light show happening within a virtual volume.
The kinetic behavior of these geometric light structures is synchronized to the sonic profile of the track. Meld is a highly energetic, beat-driven composition, and the generative system mirrors this intensity with rapid, aggressive visual sequencing that strikes in tandem with the percussion. However, as the track transitions into its softer, atmospheric interludes, the procedural motion decelerates significantly. During these ambient moments, the shifting light beams and panels weave into gentle, hypnotic patterns, creating optical illusions that briefly suspend the otherwise frantic momentum of the piece. The final output is an immersive, audio-reactive environment that bridges structural geometry and volumetric light.
