Volumetric Chroreography with Gaussian Splats
Developed as a visual counterpart for Halina Rice’s track Creation, this project is a pioneering exploration into volumetric performance capture and stereoscopic 3D rendering. Executed in collaboration with London-based motion capture studio Target3D and choreographer Anna Vargha, the initiative sought to fundamentally reimagine how audiences experience dance through emerging spatial technologies.
The production utilized a 48-camera array to capture Vargha’s physical performance, generating a high-fidelity 4D Gaussian Splat dataset. This raw volumetric data served as the foundational medium for the project. Drawing direct conceptual influence from Merce Cunningham’s early integrations of computer technology and motion capture in works like Biped, the project translates organic human movement into a fully navigable, computational space.
By processing the 4D splats for stereoscopic 3D viewing, the final visual performance breaks the traditional two-dimensional constraints of video. It immerses the viewer in the true spatial depth of the choreography, allowing the intricate dynamics of Vargha’s movement to be experienced with unprecedented volumetric presence. Operating firmly within the realm of emerging media R&D, this workflow establishes a new technical paradigm for archiving, augmenting, and presenting embodied performance through the lens of spatial computing.
