Developed as part of the visual repertoire for electronic music artist Halina Rice’s 2025 live shows, Hypnosis is an experimental AV piece that explores the aesthetics of mathematical recursion and layered computational motion. The project is built around a dual-system designed to directly mirror the structural tension of the music, translating distinct sonic layers into a cohesive generative environment.
The foundation of the visual system is driven by recursive operations applied to three-dimensional forms. Starting with primitive geometries, the procedural setup continuously subdivides and folds the meshes in upon themselves. This algorithmic growth generates intricate, emergent topologies characterized by a gentle, unusual, and infinitely unfolding motion. Visually, this fluid spatial manipulation serves as the digital counterpart to the track’s atmospheric synth lines, creating a slow-moving backdrop.
Contrasting this structural fluidity is a secondary, highly reactive layer utilizing computer vision techniques. By deploying blob tracking across the recursively folding geometries, the system traces and isolates localized movement data over time. This data is then translated into erratic, glitch-heavy tracking boxes superimposed over the 3D background. This volatile, high-contrast foreground layer is tightly synced to the aggressive, rhythmic elements of the music.
The resulting visual is a study in juxtaposition. By layering the serene, procedural evolution of the synth-driven 3D meshes with the chaotic, beat-reactive tracking artifacts, Hypnosis visualizes the duality of the audio.
