Audio Reactive Terrains
For Halina Rice’s track Accession, I developed an experimental AV piece that explores the intersection of organic motion and audio-reactive computational systems. Built entirely within TouchDesigner, the core visual concept revolves around a dense, generative bed of particles that behaves like a living, shifting topography. Drawing aesthetic inspiration from natural phenomena—specifically the fluid, wind-swept movement of desert sand and evolving landscapes, the system translates the track's sonic data into a dynamic environment.
To achieve this organic fluidity, the particle bed is manipulated by an audio-driven texture height map. As the rhythmic elements and driving beats of the track strike, they directly modulate the data of this map in real time. This sonic input forces the particles to surge, ripple, and displace, creating a visual ecosystem that moves in synchronization with the music.
The resulting piece is a study in computational nature. It successfully merges the rigid, mathematical precision of real-time particle physics with the raw, undulating flow of shifting earth, producing an immersive visual experience entirely dictated by the intricacies of the audio track.
