Momentum Visualizer
The visualizer for Momentum, a rhythm-forward track from Halina Rice’s 2022 album "Elision," explores temporal synchronization between audiovisual elements through generative systems. The visual concept centers on a virtual camera navigating a tunnel composed of modular cubes, designed to respond dynamically to the track’s moderate tempo and rhythmic structure. Implemented in TouchDesigner, the cube array was programmed to morph and animate in correlation with beat intensity, while a strobe-based lighting system was used to selectively reveal these movements.
Key to the visual strategy was the use of temporal gating — cubes remain partially obscured in darkness and become perceptible only during lighting strobes, reinforcing the track's percussive emphasis. The strobe frequency and cube deformation parameters were modulated based on amplitude analysis, resulting in a tightly coupled audiovisual experience. As the composition progresses, scene complexity intensifies through increased lighting contrast, depth of field, and geometric transformation, reflecting the track’s evolving sonic landscape.
The system was built entirely in TouchDesigner, leveraging its procedural animation and audio-reactive capabilities. Final compositing and post-production were executed in After Effects.
